I start working on Jan 30!

The IRS will be open for the business of accepting e-filed tax returns for 2012 beginning on Wednesday, Jan 30. This unusually late start to the tax season is due to last minute changes related to the American Tax Relief Act, the law passed on Jan. 1 to extend the Bush tax cuts (the austerity part of the “fiscal cliff” has yet to be dealt with). However, those of us with more complicated tax issues may not be able to file until late February or early March (http://1.usa.gov/XqVcRJ).

If you live in a state where you file a state tax return the same time you file your federal, you will probably be able to file it beginning January 30 also.
